It’s amazing what people do to compromise their message. “If they only knew what they’re doing” I’m told time and again by frustrated and concerned observers.
Most likely the challenged presenter is breaking one of the 3 Unbreakable Rules of the stage:
- Be Seen
- Be Heard
- Be Understood
Distracting tendencies like pacing, fidgeting with fingers, fleeting eye contact or hiding behind a podium prevent presenters from Being Seen.
Low vocal energy, adrenaline-fueled pace and sloppy articulation don’t help a person Be Heard. (Don’t get me started on some of the mush-mouth actors we witness these days).
And the number one cause of not being understood? Failure to check for understanding with their audience.
These are things that can be learned IF the presenter is aware they’ve got a challenge. But who’s going to tell them? And if told, what do they do to get better?
