A real gut check this morning as I learned that David Bowie died. He is such an inspiration in creativity and adaptiveness—a chameleon of music, acting and fashion. You never knew what he would come up with next, from early 70’s “Ziggy Stardust” to his simple and touching “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” duet with, yes, Bing Crosby. Wow.
I just wanted to be him, and around 1980 emulated his Ziggy in a punk rock, college version of “Prometheus Bound” where I got to know Bowie.
In the title role I donned his electric red hair and lightning bolt slash across my face. I even tried to pose like him while chained to a giant cog center stage. Very punky. And humbling….
Bowie’s adaptability in performance is remarkable. What role would he take on next? His ability to reinvent his performance based on instinct? Talent? What his audience wants? Perhaps. He busied himself with taking his audience, and new audiences to the next place. There lies inspiration for us all.
